Nagpur :-The second cadaveric organ retrieval and kidney transplant has been successfully performed at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Nagpur. This milestone in the government sector was possible due to strong support and guidance of Executive Director, Prof (Dr) M Hanumantha Rao,and Dr. Manish Shrigiriwar, Medical Superintendent, AIIMS Nagpur.
A female patient Mrs.Mandabai Thakre aged 55 years O+ blood group, Kurud, Desai Ganj , Gadchiroli, Maharashtra. Was admitted at AIIMS Nagpur for the management of Brain Tumor on 17 th July 2023 under department of Neurosurgery. She was operated for the brain Tumor at AIIMS , Nagpur . Post operatively She was managed in surgical ICU by Anesthesia and Neurosurgery team. However her condition continued to deteriorate. Meanwhile family members were conselled about the possibility of organ donation and they willingly consented for the same. The patient was maintained diligently in ICU of AIIMS Nagpur Dr. Sucheta Bhowate Meshram and her team.
The AIIMS Nagpur Brain Stem Death Committee headed by Dr Manish Shrigiriwar , Med. Superintendent, Dr Varidh Katiyar, Dr Udit Narang and Dr.Om Shubham Asai completed all the formalities and declared the patient brain dead on 3rd August 2023 at around 9: 00 AM as per THOTA Act.
AIIMS Nagpur immediately alerted ZTCC. As per norms the allocation by ZTCC Nagpur is as follows:
1. First kidney of donor was given to first waiting patient of AIIMS Nagpur.
2. Second kidney was allotted to KIMS KINGSWAY Hospital Nagpur.
