Nagpur :- Tata Group eagerly wants to acquire 51% stake in the Nagpur-based popular Indian snack chain Haldiram Foods. The talks between the two companies have hit a wall as Haldiram owners have demanded over Rs 42,000 crore for offloading 51% stake. They have valued their group’s worth at 10 billion dollars or over Rs 82,000 crore. Both Tata Group and Haldiram have denied the media reports.
According to media reports, Haldiram owners are also in talks with international investment group Bain Capital for offloading 10% stake.
According to Eurometer International, the Indian snacks market is valued at over Rs 50,800 crore. Haldiram owns 13% share in it. It has 150 outlets selling sweets and snacks and also has restaurants offering varied vegetarian dishes in these outlets.
Haldiram began with a tiny shop in Bikaner (Rajasthan) in 1937 and its first product was bhujia. For years the group was known as Haldiram Bhujiawala. The first giant leap in the company’s history was opening of an outlet in Delhi in 1982. The company gradually spread all over India and even entered the US market in view of the large expatriate population there. Haldiram is a 4 million dollar brand in US.
Tata Consumer Products, the Tata arm that wants to acquire majority stake in Haldiram, has a tie-up with UK-based tea company Tetley and has a partnership with Starbucks coffee chain.
