“IGNOU Celebrated National Science Day for Prisoners of Nagpur Central Jail”

Nagpur :- IGNOU Nagpur Regional Centre celebrated National Science Day through several activities for the Prisoners of Nagpur Central Jail, in association with Vigyan Bharati Vidarbha Pradesh Mandal.

Poster competition and essay writing competitions were held. 5 Posters and 9 essays were received. They are evaluated by Dr. Vijay Tangde, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, RTM Nagpur University.

Science Quiz was conducted for Male (31) and Female (25) Prisoners separately. Dr. Vijay Tangde conducted for Male and Dr.  Shakti Sharma, Coordinator, IGNOU Study Centre, Sadabai Raisoni Womens College conducted for women Prisoners. 5 Groups each were formed in the name of Famous Indian Scientists namely Dr. C. V. Raman, J. C. Bose, P. C. Ray, Vijay Bhatkar and Raghunath Mashelkar Groups. For women, Group names were: Indira Hinduja, Anandibai Joshi, Rajeshwari Chatterji, Janaki Ammal, Kalpana Chawla. Raghunath Mashelkar Group was winner among Men’s Groups and Janaki Ammal Group among Women.

The Certificate Distribution function was held with Dr. A. N. Vaidya, Director C.S.I.R.-NEERI as Chief Guest and Naresh Chafekar, Secretary, Vigyan Bharati – Vidarbha as Guest of Honour. Dr. P. Sivaswaroop, Senior Regional Director, IGNOU Regional Centre Nagpur explained the Objectives of the Science Day and also gave details of IGNOU Academic Activities for the Prisoners for the last 12 years. Chafekar explained about Vigyan Bharati and assured their active contribution in future such activities in the jail. Vijay Salunkhe, District and Sessions Judge, Nagpur, who is on visit to the Central Jail Nagpur appreciated the scientific temper and positivity shown by the prisoners. Dr. A. N. Vaidya appreciated the quality of the essays and the posters. He explained that everyone should have scientific temper. He said that Science is not exclusive part of regular education but part of daily life. Sir C. V. Raman invented “Raman Effect” on 28th February 1928 and so National Science Day celebrated on this day every year. Anup Kumar Kumre, Jail Superintendent addressed.

Vote of thanks proposed by Deepa Aghey, Deputy Jail Superintendent. Programme was conducted by Laxman Salve, Coordinator, IGNOU Study Centre 36018D, Central Prison Nagpur.

All the winners and participants are presented with certificates and a general knowledge/science book through the hands of the guests.

It is glad to know that the entries from Nagpur Central Jail received appreciation at National level through IGNOU New Delhi. The Essay by Vijay Tulsidas and Poster by Rajan Laxman received consolation prizes from IGNOU New Delhi.
