One-Week Training on Wildlife Health Management for Veterinarians

Nagpur :- The Wildlife Research & Training Centre (WRTC), Gorewada, Nagpur successfully hosted a one-week comprehensive training programmeon Wildlife Health Management from December 2 to December 6, 2024.

The training was funded by MAHACAMPA under the Maharashtra Forest Department. The event aimed at equipping veterinarians with essential knowledge and practical skills to address the health challenges of wildlife in a dynamic and rapidly changing ecological landscape. The programmewas inaugurated by Dr. S.V. Upadhye (Director, WRTC, Nagpur) in the presence of Shri. S.S. Bhagwat (Zoo Director BTGIZP, Nagpur & Divisional Manager, Gorewada Project).

Dr. Mayur Pawshe hosted the inaugural programme. The training attracted twenty one participants from diverse regions, highlighting the growing interest and need for specialized wildlife health expertise among veterinary professionals. The five-day training covered a wide array of topics including common diseases in wild felines, canids and birds, principles of chemical restraint, post-mortem examination, disease monitoring and wildlife rehabilitation. Each session was tailored to blend theoretical knowledge with practical applications. Wildlife health experts and forest department officials delivered interactive lectures and guided participants through hands-on sessions. Participants visited Pench Tiger Reserve and Balasaheb Thackeray Gorewada International Zoological Park, Nagpur to gain real-world insights into wildlife health monitoring, conflict management and rehabilitation practices.

Field simulation exercises focused on forensic sample collection and comprehensive health examinations were highly appreciated by the attendees. The training successfully fostered a collaborative environment for learning and exchange of ideas among veterinarians, researchers and wildlife managers. Participants developed practical expertise in wildlife health management, including diagnostic techniques, disease surveillance, and ethical considerations in wildlife care. The programme also provided a platform to discuss pressing issues such as habitat loss, climate change, and their implications on wildlife health. During the valedictory session, certificates of participation were distributed to the attendees. The Director of WRTC reiterated the Centre’s commitment to capacity building and research in wildlife health management, encouraging participants to apply their newfound knowledge in their respective domains. Dr. N.V. Kurkure, Dr. Shirish Upadhye, Dr. Vinod Dhoot, Dr. P.M. Sonkusale, Dr. Bhagyashree Bhadane, Dr. Manoj Patil, Dr. Madhuri Hedau, Dr. Megha Kaore, S.S. Bhagwat, Udamsingh Yadav, Dr. Mayur Pawshe, Dr. Shalini A.S. and Dr. Sujit Kolangath contributed as speakers during the training. Dr. Sujit Kolangath proposed the vote of thanks. Miss. Sarika Khot (Asst. manager, Goreawad Project) exerted as a coordinator for the training programme.
