Anti-people policies of Modi government responsible for India’s decline in Global Hunger Index – Kisan Sabha

Raipur :- Chhattisgarh Kisan Sabha, affiliated to All India Kisan Sabha, has blamed the anti-people policies of the Modi government at the Center for the decline in India’s position in the latest Global Hunger Index (GHI). Kisan Sabha has said that this shows how serious the food security situation is in the country and that the Modi government’s programs have completely failed to mitigate the adverse impact of the loss of livelihoods due to the pandemic and lockdown.

In a statement issued here today, Chhattisgarh Kisan Sabha Convenor Sanjay Parate has said that the report on the situation of food security and nutrition released by the United Nations shows that India is likely to face moderate and severe food insecurity between 2019-22. The number of people facing poverty has increased from 57 crore to 59 crore and the number of people facing chronic hunger has increased from 22 crore to 23 crore. This is the reason why today India stands at 111th place in the list of 125 countries in the Global Hunger Index, whereas in the year 2014 it was at 55th place. The continuous worsening of the food insecurity situation in India is the result of the Modi government’s indifference towards the people of the country.

The Kisan Sabha leader has said that the harsh lockdown imposed by the Modi government without any planning in the year 2020 during the Covid pandemic has had a devastating impact on the lives of the people. Despite having more than 100 million tonnes of grains in the warehouse, the Modi government had refused to expand the scope of the public distribution system and universalize access even during the pandemic. As a result, today crores of people in India are facing severe food shortage, most of the children and women are malnourished and healthy food is still far away from the reach of these people.

He said that instead of recognizing the country’s agricultural crisis and tackling the worsening situation of unemployment, poverty and food insecurity, the Modi government had cut food subsidies by Rs 90,000 crore in the last budget. Similarly, allocations to other social welfare schemes and MNREGA have also been cut by 30 percent.

He said that Chhattisgarh Kisan Sabha will unite the farmers to defeat this anti-people government and will work to ensure the defeat of BJP in Chhattisgarh.
