RabiesMuktNagpur: A Game Changing Win in the Fight Against Rabies – 20,392 dogs vaccinated!

Nagpur :- In a groundbreaking achievement, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation, in partnership with Mission Rabies, has exceeded its target in the ongoing #RabiesMuktNagpur initiative. The Campaign concluded with 20,392 dogs been vaccinated against rabies, surpassing the original goal of 15,000 dogs within just 15 days of the campaign itself. This mass dog vaccination drive, launched on September 1st, and culminated on World Rabies Day, September 28th, marking a significant milestone in the city’s effort to eliminate rabies.

The month-long campaign is the result of a strong collaborative effort between Mission Rabies, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation, Nagpur Veterinary College and the Nirmiti People’s and Animal Welfare Society (NPAWS), who charge of on-ground operations.

“The vaccination campaign was conducted in two segments. In the first 15 days, nine teams, including Veterinary students as a Vaccinator and Data Collector from Nagpur Veterinary College and dog catchers from Mission Rabies And HOPE and Animal Trust, worked tirelessly to vaccinate 17,392 dogs. Following this success, two teams continued the effort to vaccinate the remaining 3000 dogs and reached their goal”, said Dr. Shashikant Jadhav, Director Special Operations, WVS-Mission Rabies.

Alongside the vaccination drive, a robust awareness was conducted to educate local communities about rabies prevention, responsible pet ownership, and responding to dog bites. The education officers reached 20 schools, educating 2,673 students and 164 teachers, and engaged 27 local communities, impacting a total of 1,779 individuals.

This success reflects the power of collaborative efforts of local government, NGOs and community stakeholders to achieve a shared vision: a rabies-free Nagpur.

“A special acknowledgement goes to Dr. A. P. Somkuwar, Associate Dean of Nagpur Veterinary College, for his invaluable support and for encouraging the active participation of 38 Veterinary Students in the campaign. The dedication of Dr. Rahul S. Bombatkar, Chairman of NPAWS, has also been instrumental in ensuring the success of this effort”, said Dr. Shashikant Jadhav, WVS-Mission Rabies.

“The Nagpur Municipal Corporation is committed further strengthen the city’s efforts to eliminate rabies. The success of the #RabiesMuktNagpur initiative marks a critical step forward in eliminating rabies and creating a healthier, safer Nagpur”, said Mrs Anchal Sood Goyal, Additional Commissioner, Nagpur Municipal Corporation, Nagpur.
