Mumbai – Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari today urged the vice chancellor of the University of Mumbai to name the newly created International Students’ Hostel of the University after Swatantryaveer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. The Governor also expressed the hope that an International Sports Complex will be sanctioned to the University shortly.
Governor Koshyari, who is also the Chancellor of public universities in Maharashtra was speaking after inaugurating the new building of the International Students’ Hostel at the University’s Kalina Campus in Mumbai on Friday (8 July). The Governor also inaugurated the buildings of the New Examination Building, Knowledge Resource Centre and the Girls’ Hostel on the occasion.
The Governor said the University of Mumbai was founded in the year 1857, the year India fought its first war of Independence against the colonial rulers. Stating that it was Veer Savarkar who had described uprising against the British as the ‘First War of Independence’, the Governor said naming of the International Students Hostel after Veer Savarkar will enhance the respect for India in the heart and minds of the students.
Mentioning that the University of Mumbai had produced a galaxy of towering leaders in the past, he appealed to the University to raise its standards once again and produce Nobel laureates.
The Governor said the University must strive to promote research, innovation, incubation and entrepreneurship in today’s world. He added that apart from education, the University must imbibe the values of Sanskriti and Sanskar to students.
Vice Chancellor of the University Suhas Pednekar, Pro VC Ravindra Kulkarni, Deans, faculty and students were present.
The International Students’ Hostel has a capacity of accommodating 146 students while the Girls’ Hostel has a capacity of 144 students.
