Nagpur – Like every year, Green Vigil Foundation,a Nagpur based environment NGO conducted pre-ganpati visarjan lake monitoring program of four major lakes namely Futala, Gandhisagar, Sonegaon & Sakkardara. Since last 10 years, Green Vigil is conducting lake monitoring campaign along with Earth Echo International, an international NGO who is publishing year book each year by compiling data of surface water bodies across the world.
The pH of Sonegaon & Futala lakes have been reported as 8.2, which is little alkaline, whereas, pH of gandhisagar lake & Sakkardara lakes have been reported as 7.2 & 7.8 respectively. Turbidity of sakkardara lake has been found to be 65 – 70 JTU, whereas that of Sonegaon, Futala & Gandisagar has been reported between 60 to 65 JTU. Dissolved Oxygen ( DO) level of Sakkardara lake has been reported as 3.0 mg/l only, whereas, that of Gandisagar lake has been reported as 4.0 mg/l, Sonegaon & Futala have been reported as 4.5 mg/l.
Surbhi Jaiswal, Team Lead, Green Vigil Foundation stated, Gandhisagar lake is under rejuvenation, entire water of the lake was drained out, thus, very little water, which is available, is rain water only, hence, the pH & turbidity has been reported comparatively low as compared to last year data. She further added, the proposed fountains in futala lake will help in increasing dissolved oxygen level in lake water but the pollution level need to be controlled especially intrusion of sewage in lake. Status of Sonegaon lake remains almost same as that of last year but Sakardhara lake is in very bad shape and needs immediate attention, she added.
Mehul Kosurkar, Deputy Team Lead, GVF explained, there has been visarjan during Janmashtami especially nirmalya’s in Sonegaon and Sakkardara lakes inspite of sonegaon lake having a huge artificial tank. Like other lakes, Sonegaon too should have been barricaded during Janmashtami.
Green Vigil Team appealed to citizens not to immerse idol & nirmalyas in lakes during Ganesh and Devi visarjan and celebrate eco-friendly festivals.
