Nagpur : Smart Cities Mission and Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA)-GoI, between January 1st and January 26th, 2022, launched two unique national level challenges as part of the Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav (AKAM) : “Freedom 2 Walk & Cycle Challenge for City Leaders” and “Inter- City Freedom 2 Walk & Cycle Challenge for Citizens.”
MoHUA held an online awards ceremony on February 17th, 2022, to recognize the top performing cities and city leaders in both competitions. Among the 75 cities that participated in the challenge, Nagpur placed in the categories of maximum kilometer in walking and maximum registration in cycling among the 75 registered cities, who achieved nearly 9,80,000 km of cycling and 1,82,000 km of walking.
Buveneswari S. congratulated to the citizens and city leaders who actively participated in the challenge. She says that, it would not have been possible to reach maximum registrations in cycling and maximum kilometers in walking without supports of citizens and city leaders.
CEO, NSSCDCL further said, such type of challenges may serve a greater aim of long-term behavioural change in citizens toward green mobility and healthier living choices in a joyous attitude.
The event also outlined the objectives that cities participating in India’s Cycles4Change, Streets4People, and Transport4All Challenges. Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) is the knowledge partners of ministry for the mentioned challenges.
