37th National Games – Swimmers impress in Maharashtra’s medal campaign!

Panaji :- Maharashtra swimmers made an impression by winning a total of six medals on the sixth day of the 37th National Games on Tuesday. The golden success of Veerdhawal and Rujuta Khade became a feature. The swimmers won three gold, one silver and two silver medals. So far, it has secured the top spot in the medal table with a total of 123 medals including 52 gold, 35 silver and 36 bronze medals.

Haryana is second with 36 medals (19 gold, 10 silver, 7 bronze) and Senadal is third with 51 medals (18 gold, 17 silver, 16 bronze).

Maharashtra women’s tennis team defeated Tamil Nadu to reach the final, while the women’s hockey team beat hosts Goa 2-1 to start their campaign on a winning note. In football, Maharashtra grabbed everyone’s attention by holding defending champions Kerala to a 2-2 draw.

Also, the men and women teams of Maharashtra have a chance to win bronze medals in the archery Indian round category of the national sports competition. In sailing, the medals were decided on Wednesday as Maharashtra athletes reached the finals in three groups.

Maharashtra’s Olympian Veerdhawal Khade and his wife Rijuta did a remarkable job winning the title of fastest swimmer in the men’s and women’s categories respectively. Mihir Ambre bagged another medal in the 50m freestyle event with a bronze medal. Maharashtra’s Palak Joshi overcame illness to win the gold medal in the 200m backstroke while Rishabh Das bagged the silver medal in the event.Similarly, Tushar Geeta won bronze medal in platform diving. Maharashtra bagged a total of six medals in swimming at the National Games on Tuesday, including three gold, one silver and two silver.

Virdhawal won the gold medal in the 50 meters freestyle race in a record time of 22.82 seconds. He broke his own event record of 23 seconds in 2015 here. His colleague Mihir recorded a time of 22.99 seconds while winning the bronze medal in the same race.

Veerdhawal’s race was followed by his wife Rijuta who clocked 22.42 seconds in the 50m freestyle to claim the title of fastest swimmer. In winning the event, she broke the event record of 26.53 seconds set by Avantika Chavan in Rajkot last year.

Rishabh Das won the silver medal in the 200 meters backstroke race. He covered this distance in two minutes 4.80 seconds.

The success achieved by Palak Joshi of Maharashtra is very commendable. She won the gold medal in the 200m backstroke race in two minutes and 22.12 seconds. Today, she reached the final round with the eighth rank from the preliminary round. The Maharashtra team celebrated a resounding victory over the Uttar Pradesh team with a margin of 6-4. The best performance of Mansi Patil, Mahek and Shweta Kadam helped the Maharashtra team register a big win. Chief coach Amit Patil had planned a special strategy for victory.

The Maharashtra team started the match well in the first session of the morning. Due to this, the Uttar Pradesh team’s attempts to lead failed time and again. Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s goalkeeper Mansi Patil’s performance was remarkable. She thwarted the lead attempt of the Uttar Pradesh team.

Maharashtra grabbed all the attention by holding the defending runners-up Kerala to a 2-2 draw in football in the national sports tournament.

Kerala’s Mohammed Ashiq scored the first goal in the 23rd minute of the Group B match, while Nijo scored the second goal in the 42nd minute through a penalty.So Kerala took a 2-0 lead at the end of the first session. There were signs that Kerala would win the match comfortably as they remained scoreless for about 32 minutes in the second session as well. But this was rejected by Maharashtra. In the 82nd minute, Mandeep opened the scoring for Maharashtra. Then five minutes later (87th minute) Yash Shukla scored a spectacular goal with a header to bring Maharashtra level. The Maharashtra men’s team beat Bihar 6-0 in the ongoing tournament at the Goa College of Engineering ground in Ponda. The men’s team consists of Roshan Salunkhe, Shubham Nage, Rishikesh Chandurkar, Sumit Gurumule.

Maharashtra women team beat Jharkhand team by 6-2. The women’s team consists of Sakshi Sonavane, Natasha Dumane, Shreya Khandar, Bhavana Sattagiri. Maharashtra’s challenge came to an end as they lost to Manipur in the mixed group.
