World Sparrow Day Celebration Organised at Gorewada Biodiversity Park.

Nagpur – The Wildlife Research & Training Centre (WRTC), Gorewada, Nagpur in collaboration with Gorewada
Project, FDCM Ltd., Nagpur and Nagpur Veterinary College, Nagpur arranged a bird watching session
for the students of Nagpur Veterinary College, Nagpur on the occasion of 13th ‘World Sparrow Day’.

A total of 60 students participated in the event. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Shirish Upadhye, Director, WRTC emphasized the need to encourage collaborative approach for conservation of birds.
Meanwhile,  H.V. Madbhushi, Divisional Manager, Gorewada Project expressed concern over the over exploitation of urban habitats leading to decline in the population of birds. Kalpana Chinchkede highlighted the role of birds in the ecosystem. The students participated in bird watching under the guidance of Dr. Sujit Kolangath, Dr. Mayur Pawshe, Kalpana Chinchkhede and Shubham Chhapekar.

The students learnt about the basics of birding and identified over 30 species of birds at the Gorewada Biodiversity Park. Some of the important sightings included Pheasant Tailed Jacana, Lesser Whistling Duck, Bronze Winged Jacana, Lesser Cormorant, Purple Heron, Asian Open Billed Stork, White breasted Kingfisher, Common Coot, Purple Moorhen and others.  Vijay Suryawanshi,Nilay Bhoge,  Sukhadev Raut were present during the celebration. Dr. Sujit Kolangath
anchored the programme while Dr. Mayur Pawshe expressed the vote of thanks.
